Dr. Peter Hauser
Dr. Hauser was recently named the 2017 Olney Award winner for Outstanding Achievement in Textile Chemistry.
The Olney Medal is the highest scientific award handed out by the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC).
After receiving his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Department of Chemistry at North Carolina State University, Dr. Hauser began a career as an industrial research chemist that spanned twenty four years and included positions with several textile manufacturers and textile chemical producers. He holds ten U.S. patents in the areas of soil release, flame retardancy, and low pollution dyeing. He has traveled extensively in the United States, Latin America, and China providing technical assistance to textile manufacturers in all areas of textile wet processing. In 1997, Dr. Hauser joined the faculty of the College of Textiles. He has published extensively in the textile chemistry literature and is the co-author of “Chemical Finishing of Textiles” published by Woodhead Publishing of Cambridge, England.

Dr. Ahmed El-Shafei
Ahmed El-Shafei is a Professor of Fiber and Polymer Science and the Program Director of Polymer and Color Chemistry in Wilson College of Textiles at North Carolina State University. He holds a Ph.D. in Fiber and Polymer Science and a Ph.D. in Physical Organic Chemistry from NC State University.
His research paradigms span:
Innovative and sustainable chemistry approaches for sustainable dyeing and finishing including foam applications.
Use of atmospheric plasma and UV treatment for graft polymerization of different monomers into different polymeric substrates to enhance polymer functionalities for medical and military applications.
Fundamental understanding of the photochemistry and photodegradation mechanisms of dyes, polymers, fibers and colored fabrics and films
Developments of novel halogen-free flame retardant monomers for natural and thermoplastic fibers
Developments of novel panchromatic photosensitizers for high efficiency dye-sensitized solar cells
El-Shafei is a recognized author of over 220 scholarly articles and awards winner of many scholarly achievements including Nancy Pollock Dissertation Award, the best Ph.D. dissertation award in 2002, University Faculty Scholar Award and Outstanding Teacher Award. He is an editor/associate editor of six journals, including a subject editor for the Journal of Textile Institute (Dyeing and Finishing), a lead editor for a special issue entitled: "Functional Dyes", Journal of Chemistry, associate editor for Open Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, editor for Open Journal of Synthesis, Theory and Applications, a guest editor for Advanced OptoElectronics, a special issue on "Intelligent Materials for Novel Generation of Solar Cells”, and an editor of Journal of Forensic Investigation.

Dr. Abdel-Fattah Mohamed Seyam
Dr. Seyam has been in the faculty of the Department of Textile and Apparel Management at NC State College of Textiles since 1991. He has also been an Instructor at both Alexandria University and Mansoura University, Egypt, and a Research Engineer for Burlington Industries, North Carolina, and a Project Manager for Valdese Textiles in Valdese, North Carolina.
Dr. Seyam teaches fabric formation and structures at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He teaches short courses and workshops in advanced woven fabric design, nonwovens and new developments in weaving and weaving preparation technologies.
Dr. Seyam has mentored 111 Master and Doctoral students (90 Chair/Co-Chair and 21 member), and 25 international visitors (Post Doc, Visiting Scholars, and Trainees). Dr. Seyam’s effective mentorship and advising has guided his students to reach their full potential and contribute intellectually to their research. He prepares students to be leaders in their fields. His former students, trainees, and visiting scholars are holding high positions in academic institutions, government agencies, and industry in North America, Asia, Europe, Middle East, and South America. Their accomplishments (publications, presentations, patents, product development, etc.) are impressive.
Dr. Seyam has published as co-author with his students and national/international collaborators and as sole author (238 papers: 97 refereed journals, 25 scholarly, 109 conference, 3 books and 4 book chapters) and presented (157 conference and in-plant presentations plus 71 poster presentations) extensively. He authored two user-friendly computer software packages with extensive codes for manufacturing and engineering woven structures for two of his former employers. He is co-inventor of 4 patents in cold weather systems and electrotextiles and filed 12 invention disclosures.

OSM Shield has a Testing and Service Agreement with North Carolina State University whereby OSM Shield has access to both laboratory and commercial textile equipment located at the College of Textiles. This Testing and Service Agreement is supervised by Jeffrey Krauss. Jeff has over 12 years of private sector industry experience at Burlington Industries, and has managed the NC State research facilities for 21 years.
